About
Trails
WilzFoto & Co are the stewards of the upper Smuggler/Hunter trail-parcel that includes Midnight Rambler and Chop Suey (Trails).
Project:
These trails were the result of an intentional effort to deconflict the HC parcel with existing users while delivering an authentic and unique trail experience to Enduro and Trail MTB enthusiasts, while bringing some sorely needed diversity to the valley singletrack riding experience.
This development is consistent with where the industry-side of the sport is, both represented by sales metrics as well as surveyed user-data, globally.
Inspiration
These trails are a nod to much of what we've been privileged to experience through years of riding, racing and coaching at the highest level in Enduro. From the Alps to Whistler and everywhere in between; witnessing creative trail-building, being a part of an incredible movement in the Enduro and freeride segments, and working hard to give voice to these segments through both photography and writing...all of which has helped to bring this experience home.
Aspen is located in some truly stunning country and to not acknowledge the opportunity to build some proper descents here is to do the region a unconscionable disservice, in our opinion.
The future of the sport depends heavily on diversity in experience. We recognize this; having had to deal with the lack-of, during our own early-season-prep for races over the years.
Building real-world opportunities for everyone to experience in a world-class 'destination mountain resort' is common sense. So we're please to care for the public-offering of these 2 trails, in cooperation with Pitkin County Trails and Open Space.
Philosophy
Mountain Biking can be whatever you want.
But people deserve a range of available options to make decisions and facilitate grown within the sport. It's impossible to grow the experience for users if there's only a single type of trail available. Kids growing up here need to have access to options to learn about the different possibilities. Diversity in experience and progression are critical, just like in skiing (and all other sports).
We're here to represent options and diversity in experience.
Conservation & Commitment
This is a Conservation project... believe it or not.
The philosophy for building revolves around 'doing no harm', and building with the smallest possible footprint. We go around trees, we don't cut them down. We scratch the surface with hand-tools, never machines. We build no structures. We leave the area as undisturbed as possible, while practicing established trail-building technique, quality stabilization, and approved soils management and erosion control. Our methods are consistent with some of the greatest riding zones on the planet (Whistler, La Thuile, Canazei, Savoie Region, etc)
This is a community-service, all volunteer effort. Our office is paperless. We live solar-powered, and as low-impact as possible—mostly plant-based, up-cycled gear, wool clothing, minimal driving, human-powered transport wherever possible.
Let’s leave this place better than we found it.
